Natalie Imbruglia talks about the Kailis Photoshoot

NATALIE Imbruglia is loving life in LA and being the new face of Kailis and its stunning pearls.

It was a dream shoot that could have turned sour at any moment. In the idyllic tropical landscape of Karma Kandara Resort, Bali, the Kailis team had not anticipated rain. So with internationally renowned photographer Juli Balla, celebrity stylist Christine Centenera and the star of the show, Aussie actress and singer-songwriter Natalie Imbruglia, waiting nervously for the sun to return, they decided to call on some divine intervention.

“The location was mind-blowing, but the day before the shoot it was raining,” Imbruglia says.

“Some Balinese priests came and performed a weather ceremony to ask the gods to keep the rain away. It worked – we had blue skies for the two days of the shoot and, can you believe it, the rain was back the next day.”

Imbruglia is the latest ambassador for WA pearl brand Kailis and says it’s the first jewellery line that she’s endorsed.

“I admit I had a preconceived idea of what pearl jewellery was like,” she says.

“Sonia (Mackay-Coghill, Kailis’s general manager) approached me earlier this year and the collection she showed me was wonderful and so modern. From there I knew I wanted to work with this great Australian brand.”

Mackay-Coghill believes it’s a defining campaign for the company.

“Natalie embodies the ‘international Australian’ – she is incredibly inclusive, while radiating this enduring beauty that we know will connect with our audience internationally,” she says.

Imbruglia, who will be the face of Kailis for two years, still calls London home, but has made a base in Los Angeles where she is working on a new album.

“I have made a habit of changing environment while songwriting, and LA is the perfect location to start this process,” she says.

“So many Australians are doing so well here. Funnily enough, Guy Sebastian (fellow X-Factor judge) lives in the same area in LA as me, so we have hung out a few times, which has been fun.

“I am really enjoying songwriting in LA and making the most of the beautiful climate. It has a great vibe and is full of talented people who are very creative and supportive.

“I keep being told by the locals how popular we Australians are here.

“I am a real outdoors person. I love hiking in the hills, eating well and going to the beach, which is obviously a contrast to London.”

One thing Imbruglia won’t be doing again in a hurry is running a marathon. The singer pulled on the joggers for the London Marathon, raising funds for the UN’s End Fistula campaign,

“That was a once-in-a-lifetime experience and I raised a lot of money for End Fistula and the other charitable partners of Virgin Unite,” she says. “But my feet have never been the same.”

Imbruglia says it’s been a while since she was in Perth and hopes to plan a trip to visit friends here. Now with her Kailis connection, Perth and Broome might be on the cards sooner.

Natalie Imbruglia in InStyle Australia’s September 2011 Issue

Natalie Imbruglia breezes onto a rooftop garden in Los Angeles, wearing fitted jeans and a matte metallic-leather jacket. “I remember the first time I came here,” she says, as she takes in the expansive views of the city she’s calling home, following a stint in Sydney. “I [had] just got my first record deal and was staying in an apartment with a pull-down bed. I was so excited. You know when you go to a place and feel like you’ve been there before? LA was like that for me. I feel at home here.”

But it’s not the golden beaches, palm trees or star spotting (during the interview, Gwen Stefani sits nearby with her two sons) that have caused the former X-Factor judge to transplant herself from her main residence in London to California. It’s the opportunity to start work on her music again. “I think there can be a lot of pressure in the industry so I’m trying to regain that youthful, childlike love of music,” says Imbruglia, who was raised on the NSW Central Coast, the eldest of four daughters. “And I have a lot of writing buddies here, so I’m excited to see what eventuates.”

It’s also a chance to take a breather from the hectic pace of the previous 12 months. As well as her X-Factor duties, Imbruglia was and remains heavily involved with Richard Branson’s charity outfit Virgin Unite, which raises awareness of the condition known as obstetric fistula. “They didn’t really have a spokesperson and it is not a warm, fuzzy charity, so I felt I could be of service,” Imbruglia says of the decision she made in 2005 to align herself with this particular cause. “It horrifies me that there are a lot of women in the world who can’t deliver a baby safely.”

What about starting her own family? “Sure,” the 36-year-old says, adding she’s happily single now (Imbruglia was married to former Silverchair frontman Daniel Johns from 2003 to 2008) but is open to meeting the right person. “I think as a woman you always think about having a family. But I don’t need that to define me. I don’t feel that pressure.”

So, instead she’s focusing on her music—and her health. Imbruglia rarely drinks alcohol and tries to exercise at least four times a week using the Tracy Anderson method, famously favoured by Gwyneth Paltrow. “For me it is the perfect workout,” she explains. “It’s dance cardio, and I was a trained dancer to the age of 16. You’re so busy trying to think of the steps, you don’t realise how hard you’re working.”

Looking good has its perks—like being approached to be the new face of Australian jewellery label, Kailis. “They sent me some designs to look at and I loved them. When I met the designer [Simon Henderson] and the team, that sealed it for me.” Having purchased her first pearls eight years ago at a vintage store in Newcastle, Imbruglia is now a convert—a pearl-topped, black-diamond encrusted Kailis ring now resides permanently in her collection and today sits on her finger.

Her style is now a far cry from the pixie-haired, combat pants-wearing girl seen in the “Torn” video of the late ’90s. “Over the years, working with stylists has given me an appreciation for fashion that I never had when
I started out,” she explains, listing a Balmain jacket and a Balenciaga clutch as recent buys.

Fashion choices aside, it’s been 14 years since “Torn” catapulted Imbruglia onto the global stage. Is there a piece of advice she wishes she could give her younger self? “Enjoy yourself more,” she laughs. “I look back at pictures and think I look terrified. I don’t think I had as much fun as I should have because I was just trying to handle the situation or feel worthy of it. So yeah, have a bit more fun. Lighten up love!” —Colin Bertram

Natalie Imbruglia is the new face of Kailis Jewellery

Leading WA brand Kailis Jewellery has secured a true Aussie gem to head up its latest campaign.

With her ethereal beauty, Natalie Imbruglia is the perfect choice to front their new Angelic range.

It is the first time Kailis has used an Australian identity to front one of its campaigns.

“The fact that the Kailis family has built this incredible luxury brand and range out of Perth in Western Australia is a story I’m really proud to be a part of,” the actress, singer and TV personality said.

Shot at the Karma Kandara resort in Bali, the campaign’s hero image features Imbruglia holding the biggest pearl Kailis has unearthed in the last five years – and one of the biggest in the world, right. Sourced in northern Australia, it is a rare semi-baroque pearl, 22mm in diameter, and has a AAA grading.

Kailis Jewellery general manager Sonia Mackay-Coghill said the campaign was a defining one for the brand after an incredible 12 months, which saw worldwide exposure, thanks largely to Oprah Winfrey giving out 6000 Kailis-designed necklaces at her Sydney Opera House shows in December.

“We wanted to embody a brand that is about warmth, sensuality and beauty and we wanted to reconnect with our Australian roots and also incorporate a natural element and I couldn’t think of a better candidate than Natalie Imbruglia,” Mackay-Coghill said.

“She is just an effortless beauty and we are really proud to be able to incorporate her into what we are doing.”

Mackay-Coghill said she was keen to use the Karma Kandara resort setting, particularly because of its Perth connection – being owned by John Spence.

“Karma in Bali is just a spectacular, breathtaking resort and I think John is just a brilliant West Australian who is also taking an amazing brand in Karma to the world,” she said. “We have worked together before and the opportunity to showcase his resort and incorporate another product that is the brainchild of a great West Australian, was wonderful.”
The 36-piece range, which features pink diamonds and Australian South Sea pearls and will be available from September 1, will be launched with a Princess Party in the brand’s Fremantle boutique next month and Mackay-Coghill did not rule out the possibility of Imbruglia attending the exclusive bash.

Once upon a time, Natalie Imbruglia was best known as the cute crooner of the 1998 smash hit “Torn.” While the Australian singer continued in music and acted in films like Johnny English and Closed for Winter, she never duplicated the popularity of her initial musical splash. Natalie Imbruglia’s second chance at popularity came from judging music rather than performing it. Taking a page from the Paula Abdul playbook in 2010, she joined the judging panel on The X Factor in Australia, encouraging results that subsequently earned her a Silver Logie nomination from TV Week for Most Popular TV Presenter. Her return to relevance has been solidified.

Here is the first picture of X Factor judge Natalie Imbruglia’s cupcake-themed Notting Hill Shopping Bag which goes on sale across Notting Hill and from stalls on Portobello Road Market from Friday.

The X-Factor judge has designed a limited editon ‘cupcake’ themed cotton bag for the Notting Hill Shopping Bag Company. Her bag is inspired by her love of Portobello Road’s famous Hummingbird Bakery, and will be on sale for the next month in shops and stalls around Notting Hill.

The bag is one of a series of bags produced by The Notting Hill Shopping Bag project, a new community project, which aims to reduce plastic bag use, and donates 10% of profits to good causes. The first bag in the series featured an image designed by an 11-year-old pupil at Colville Primary School, and future bags are already in the pipeline from pupils of other schools and other celebrities who live in Notting Hill.

Natalie Imbruglia’s spokesman said: “Natalie loves all the unique bars and cafes along Portobello Road and often stops at the Hummingbird for a cupcake.”

Her limited edition bag is priced at £4, and will be available from stalls along Portobello Road Market and shops across Notting Hill.

Natalie Imbruglia Denounces Fur-Wearers in Troubling New Video

Category : causes, fashion, featured

London – Today, in advance of London Fashion Week (17 September through 21 September), PETA is releasing a graphic new video narrated by singer Natalie Imbruglia that puts furry designers and fur-bent shoppers in their rightful place – at the bottom of the heap.

Natalie Imbruglia by KARL GRANT

“There is no kind way to rip the skin off animals’ backs”, says Imbruglia, a recent guest judge on The X Factor with fellow PETA supporter and fur foe Simon Cowell. “Anyone who wears any fur shares the blame for the torture and gruesome deaths of millions of animals each year.”

Although fur farming is outlawed in the UK, it is still legal to import pelts. In China, the world’s leading fur exporter, animals on fur farms are commonly skinned alive, as shown in video footage on PETA.org.uk. Millions of dogs and cats are also killed in China for the international fur trade. Fur from China is often processed and relabelled in other countries, making it impossible to tell where – or which species – the fur came from. European fur farms are no better; animals on European farms are kept in filthy, cramped cages before they are killed by gassing, electrocution or neck-breaking.

“Saving animals is as simple as choosing synthetic alternatives instead of real fur”, says Imbruglia.

More than 90 per cent of Britons as well as many of the world’s most stylish celebrities – including Eva Mendes, Kate Winslet, Kelly Osbourne, Charlize Theron and Natalie Portman – shun fur.

Many of the world’s most exclusive fashion designers – including Vivienne Westwood, Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren and Stella McCartney – leave fur out of their designs. And countless retailers, from popular high street shops such as Topshop and Monsoon to luxury department stores such as Harvey Nichols, House of Fraser and Selfridges, have no-fur policies.

Natalie Imbruglia designs knitwear

Most people regret their decision to get a tattoo. But Natalie Imbruglia is so taken with hers that she  used it as the inspiration for her new knitwear collection.

Natalie, pictured modeling the four-leaf clover that features on the back of one of her cashmere tops, named the piece ‘Lucky’ as part of her collaboration with fashion label Banjo & Matilda.

The 'Lucky' sweater, is based on the tattoo the singer has on her wrist, a reminder of how grateful she is

Banjo & Matilda

And the Australian singer clearly has a lot to be thankful for as she shows off her natural good looks and ton

ed legs in a sweater dress and YSL platform heels.

The project will see $100 from each £299 sweater

donated to her chosen charity, the End Fistula Campaign, which is a compelling women’s rights issue that is prevalent in many poor countries of the world.

Natalie, 35, now single after divorcing from Daniel Johns two years ago,  attributes the name of the collection to her constant fascination with life’s journey and the adventures and choices she faces daily.

The word ‘luck’ is also featured on the inside of the sleeve to remind customers of the opportunity for chance and freedom in their lives.

The former Neighbours actress said: ‘The four-leaf clover is a powerful symbol to me, so much so that I have it tattooed on the inside of my wrist.

‘My sister and I both have the design to remind us of not only one another, but also of how grateful we are to be living great lives’.

The Torn singer is looking forward to being back in the spotlight again when she appears on the X Factor , where she stood in as a guest judge for Dannii Minogue while she was on maternity leave.

Natalie is also readying herself for a full time judging role on X Factor Australia. She will be joined on the panel by Boyzone star Ronan Keating.

The fashion project will see $100 from each sweater donated to Natalie's chosen charity

As for her role alongside Simon Cowell, Louis Walsh and Cheryl Cole here in the UK, she said: ‘It’s important not to break someone’s spirit.

‘But there are a lot of people who have an unrealistic view of their talent. It’s important to tell them the truth.’

Banjo & Matilda Australia collaborates with a new celebrity guest designer every year, producing a limited edition sweater.

Last year, the highly successful collaboration with Elle Macpherson launched the celebrity Guest Designer concept with sell-out results.

Behind The Scenes Of Natalie Imbruglia’s Opera House Shoot

Category : fashion

You’ll probably recognize the cute as a button Mouseketeer (at right, obviously) as Australian singer-songwriter Natalie Imgruglia. You’ll also probably recognize the Sydney Harbour bridge in the background and by way of spatial logic deduce that Ms. Imbruglia and her bearded man friend are atop the Sydney Opera House. Him however, you might not know. The name’s Chris Searl though some call him Hollywood – Monster Children co-founder, photographer, all round good dude and beard enthusiast. We recently caught up with the hairier of the two to discuss the extravagant lengths Harper’s BAZAAR went to for their forthcoming Wonderland shoot, Natalie Imbruglia slipping on the sails and shooting a future classic Australian fashion editorial.

Hey Hollywood, how were you approached for this gig?
Harper’s commissioned 8 Australian Photographers, with 8 Australian Designers all shot around a Wonderland theme, hence the Minnie Mouse styling. So they approached me as one of the 8 guys to shoot, and I got paired up with the good people at Sass and Bide. From there I sat with the project creative director Edward Coutts-Davidson and we both threw ridiculous ideas back and forth at each other.

And how did the Opera House idea come about?
I was thinking what hadn’t been done in Australian fashion before from a photography perspective. I’d remembered Georges Antoni had shot Sophie Ward on the Harbour Bridge, but no one had been on the Opera House sails before. I drive past that thing every morning and thought how good it would be to be able to get up the top, but never thought it could actually happen. The last people that went up there were those squealing Qantas kids for a commercial and prior to that Samantha Riley for the opening of the Olympic Ceremony, so it was insane to think they’d let some bearded monster like me with a camera up there.

And how do you actually get up there?
I always thought that you’d walk up the outside of the spine of the sails. You actually have to go on a half hour climb, in and out of small tunnels, up and down ladders, literally crawling on your hands and knees at times, and then the safety boss who has one of only two keys that open up the hatches lets you out the very top.

What was it like working with Natalie Imbruglia?
She was awesome. I met her the day before for a fitting with the Sass and Bide girls, and she was rad. Not at all scared of heights and wanted to do whatever it took to get some amazing pictures. She was more freaked out inside the tunnels than actually sitting up on the rails. But overall she was so excited to be up there. Not a bad spot to have your portrait taken though I guess.

Tell me about the shoot day.
In order to get up the sail for first light, we had a Hair and Makeup call time of 4:00am. So those guys had limited time to get Natalie dressed and ready to climb up for 5:30am. The day was so miserable. It was grey and raining and looked like it was going to get called off but we only had this one day to make it happen. So 7 of us went up the tunnels not knowing if we were going to be able to shoot or not. Once we were up there, the call was made and we were out there. Although you’re only allowed 4 people out on the sails at any one time. So it was, Natalie Imbruglia, Mike Purvis a Photo Assist, a safety officer and myself out there. Firstly we shot on one sail to get the perspective of looking back at another sail, so that you could see exactly where we were and then we moved up to the highest point for another option. I think we were allowed two hours up there all together, so once we were done we signed the inside of the tunnel and were back down by around 9am.

Most memorable moments from the shoot?
There were so many moments that I’ll look back on and remember. Natalie slipping up the top, phoning the wife from the very top sail, having only 45mins sleep before going up and generally just the excitement of it all, knowing we were the first to shoot a fashion image up there that will be looked back on for years to come was pretty incredible.

Have you seen any shots from the other photographers for this Harpers Issue?
I’ve seen them all. And they’re all pretty amazing. It’s great to see the different styles and ideas each photographer and the Bazaar creative team put in to this Wonderland project. I think I like Stephen Wards ‘Ali Baba and the 40 thieves with the Bra Boys’ although David Mandlebergs ‘Teresa Palmer’ shot is fucking great, but then Jordan Graham’s photo he did with the ‘Romance was Born’ kids I wish I’d taken also. It’s out on Monday, so they’d kick my arse if I didn’t say go get one – after you buy Monster Children of course.

Cheers Hollywood.
No worries mate.
