At the beginning of the year (jan 2 – jan 7), 16th Street Actors Studio in Melbourne brought out Chubbuck to run an intensive four-day masterclass espousing her famous ‘Chubbuck’ technique. There were 32 places for professional actors based on submission then selection. You paid about $1200 to participate and it really gave one a taste of what these regular classes are like.

Each actor was assigned a scene partner and allocated a scene, which Chubbuck chooses. The instruction was then to read Chubbuck’s book, Power of the Actor (which you are given), and apply her 12 steps to the work. Once that is complete you continue with your rehearsal process before presenting the scene on stage at the Malthouse Theatre in Melbourne for Chubbuck, your classmates and 300 auditors in the audience.

After working on stage with Chubbuck for about an hour, you then watched the remaining scenes for the day before heading back to the rehearsal room at night to re-work the scene with the new notes, in preparation for a second performance.

One got to see every single actor grow enormously in the work they produced. Pia Miranda and Natalie Imbruglia tackled playing a lesbian relationship infused with drug addiction in a scene from GIA. Refining objectives, then really pursuing those objectives, seemed the key to unlocking great performances time and time again. At the end of the four days one had the privilege of being able to share such an intimate yet exposing working environment with 31 incredibly talented actors.

Stuck in a rut with Natalie Imbruglia and Daniel Johns

Shooting a steamy sex scene with a stunner like Natalie Imbruglia would put most men under the pump.
But for actor Daniel Frederiksen it became even more awkward when the brunette beauty’s then-husband turned up to watch.

Hunk Frederiksen, who starred with the pop chick in new Aussie drama Elise, has revealed that during their most intimate moment he was thrown – because Silverchair frontman Daniel Johns turned up on set. Johns, who has since split with Imbruglia, then plonked himself down in a chair to watch.

“It was supposed to be an awkward love scene where she’s bored and looking off to the side and I’m rutting away,” explains the Blue Heelers and Bastard Boys star who plays Elise’s boyfriend, Martin, in the film.

“It wasn’t all that sexy. Daniel, her husband, happened to show up that day and was sitting in the room watching.”

Her hair might be a mousy brown mess and in need of deep conditioning, but Natalie Imbruglia’s role in South Australian-made movie Elise is still likely to turn heads. The first official picture of the new-and-improved, twice-as-serious Imbruglia has been released ahead of a marketing push for the Cannes Film Festival next month.

Given that work is continuing on the film’s editing and soundtrack, it’s unlikely that the production company, Essential Pictures, will be showing anyone more than a few clips of the $2.4 million movie at Cannes.
But it’ll be hoping Imbruglia’s popularity as a singer helps it stitch up international deals.
Elise is an adaptation of Adelaide author Georgia Blain’s novel, Closed for Winter, and was shot over five weeks late last year’.

Imbruglia plays the withdrawn and quiet Elise Silverton.
