PEOPLE don’t quite know what to make of Natalie Imbruglia. Is she a cold fish, or just someone who likes her privacy?

Does she fly the flag for Australia overseas, or is this a prime example of a born-again Brit? Waiting to meet the woman herself in a harbourside cafe, I have no idea what to expect.

She installs herself opposite me with a polite handshake and instantly starts firing questions at me. Where did I get my handbag? Who cuts my hair? Do I have kids? Whatever I might have prepared myself for, this isn’t it.

“It’s funny – people have a weird concept of me,” she says, with a look that’s one-third concerned, two-thirds amused.

“I’m definitely different to how I’m perceived.”

Which is?

“I’d say people might think I’m above my station,” she answers, squarely making eye contact.

“I don’t know. It doesn’t really bother me. But I’m kind of happy to be home, so people can get to know me again.”

Imbruglia’s back in the country for the new Seven Network series The X Factor, taking her place in the judging panel alongside Kyle Sandilands, Ronan Keating and Guy Sebastian.
Having been immersed in the music and acting industry all her adult life, she’s an ideal mentor for the young hopefuls the show’s bound to attract.

Still, after 17 years living in the UK, it was a surprise to hear she was onboard. What’s more, as a celebrity who’s notoriously protective of her privacy, she’s not the obvious fit for such a mainstream show. I wonder whether she’s properly thought it through.

“Yeah, a lot,” comes the reply. “There was a time when I wouldn’t have been able to handle it – I’ve never been good at the public side of things. But now, I think I’m old enough. I’m more comfortable in my own skin. Wisdom comes with age, you know?”

Today, the 35-year-old is warm and friendly, talking freely and listening attentively. Though she’s certainly not overflowing with cuddles or bawdy jokes, it wouldn’t be fair to call her cold.

Instead, she’s intelligent, poised and unflappable, more like the stars of the olden days than some of her attention-hungry contemporaries.

Petite without being bird-like, she’s dressed in an understated outfit of skinny blue jeans and a long, grey cashmere cardigan, with perfect skin and those ever-plump lips.

This is a woman who can’t help but bring an element of cool to the show. “I always watched the UK version thinking, that’s a dream job,” she says.

“So when the email came from Australia asking if I was interested, I couldn’t go back to sleep. It was exciting to be offered a job I want to do, back home.”

So, Imbruglia still calls Australia home. But is she really one of us, after living abroad for so long? Her parents and three sisters still live here, and she now has nieces and a nephew, too, along with her old school friends.

“If the show’s a huge success, I might buy a place here,” she says.

“I miss the beach. But I love travelling, so if I could live half the year here and half the year in London, that would be amazing. Once you catch the travel bug, it’s hard to stay put. I think that’s a change in me that might never correct itself.”

There’s nothing the Australian public loves more than one of our own coming back to the flock. We embraced Dannii Minogue’s return, desperately hoping she’s back for good.
Minogue, of course, came home to nest, bringing with her a man and a baby bump.

Imbruglia, on the other hand, flew back alone. Although she’s been linked to a string of men over the past few years (including David Schwimmer, Prince Harry, Josh Hartnett and David Walliams), there is, she says, no romance in the air right now. “I’m dating, but you know…”

Women who are unlucky in love seem to perplex us. We couldn’t be keener to see the likes of Jennifer Aniston paired up with a nice husband and a couple of offspring, and I suspect we’d all like something similar for Imbruglia.
Instead, her one notable attempt at long-term love was her marriage to Silverchair frontman Daniel Johns. A match made in heaven is rarely a match conducted from separate continents, and no one was greatly surprised when they announced their split four years later, in 2008.

These days, is love even a priority? “God, yeah. It just hasn’t been knocking at my door lately!” She doubles over with a raucous laugh.

“It’s not as if it worries me not to have a boyfriend – I’m loving it. But, 100 per cent, I see myself settling down at some point.”

How that would sit with her penchant for globe-trotting isn’t clear just yet. “I think when you have a baby, it changes you. I don’t know how I’ll react,” she says. “Will I take the family around the world with me? Or will I suddenly want to do the white-picket-fence thing?”

However it plays out, one thing’s for sure, as with everything else in her life, it will happen on her own terms.

“You can always adopt. If I couldn’t have my own, I’d do that,” she stops herself and sits back with a shake of the head. “Listen – I don’t even have a boyfriend, so this is way beyond me.”

The notion of adoption clearly strikes a chord, and you get the sense that Imbruglia is very aware of those less fortunate.

She’s been an ambassador for the UN-led Campaign to End Fistula since 2005. A common condition in sub-Saharan Africa and Asia among women without proper obstetric care, it leads to stillborn births and chronic medical issues for the mum.

“Not many people wanted to speak out on it, because it’s a bit of an icky subject, so I realised I could be well used,” she recalls.

But despite her visits to Ethiopia and Nigeria to see its effects, her efforts initially came under fire.

“People thought I wasn’t being authentic, that I was doing it for selfish reasons.”

Luckily, a friend offered her advice. “Bono told me to stick at it and eventually people realise you’re serious. I was able to prove them wrong.”

In April, she ran the London Marathon to raise money for the campaign, tackling the 42km course in just over five hours.

“I lost a toenail, which was horrible,” she says. “And for two months afterwards, I’d get up in the morning and the arches of my feet were in such pain, I couldn’t walk.”

She prefers working out, when in London, with a trainer from Tracy Anderson’s school of fitness (Anderson is known for keeping Madonna’s body in check). “I can’t diet,” she adds.

“I eat out and I like to go for a drink with mates. If you’re a food lover like me, you become addicted to exercise.”

Whatever she’s doing, it’s working. The only thing she isn’t happy with is her hair.

“It’s not in great condition, so I have extensions put in for events, which I hate,” she says, blaming the blonde phase she went through a few years ago.

“We’ll put that down to divorce, I think. Everyone told me I couldn’t go blonde, but I had to do it. And let’s face it, it was a disaster.”

With her self-deprecating humour, she’s surprised me again.
Imbruglia isn’t the ice queen she’s often painted as.

“Seeing me every episode, people will get a sense of who I am. I’m gonna burst my aloof bubble,” she laughs. She pauses, staring out at the dark clouds hovering over the water. “And that could go either way, couldn’t it?”

X Factor’s Natalie Imbruglia rethinks music career after lukewarm response to Come to Life album

POP star Natalie Imbruglia has quit her singing career, and will use her time as a mentor on upcoming television show X Factor to plot a future path.

“I’m deciding how I feel,” Imbruglia said. “It’s breathing space to figure out how I will continue – or if I will continue.”

If?

“Oops. Did that slip out?” Imbruglia smiled.

“We will see. I’ve put everything on hold to do this show. I’ll take time out to figure it out.”

Imbruglia is enjoying her spot as a mentor in the music industry.

It is a stark contrast to life in the spotlight and a recent string of unsuccessful records.

Imbruglia’s last album, Come to Life, with tracks written by Coldplay’s Chris Martin, did not crack the top 50.

It sold a meagre 750 copies in its first week.

Imbruglia sought investors to fund the album.

“I ended up going independent, getting finance and doing it my way,” she said.

“It’s really hard out there. There is not as much money in the industry. They don’t want to pay for campaigns.

“There have definitely been frustrations trying to put records out and do it the way I want.”

The former Neighbours star had a worldwide hit with her debut single, Torn, and then her album Left of the Middle, which ended up selling six million copies.

Imbruglia – who is divorced from singer Daniel Johns – has weathered lows by being tough.

“I’m happy I’m working. But I’ve got a thick skin,” she said.

“You need a rhinoceros’s skin to work in this industry. I’ve lightened up over the years. But everyone here (at X Factor) thinks I’m aloof.

“I’m loving doing the show, though. This is a dream job for me.”

Lately, London-based Imbruglia has dabbled in the fashion trade.

She designed a cashmere jumper for Banjo & Matilda, a label founded by Elle Macpherson’s sister-in-law, Belynda Macpherson.

Imbruglia’s mentor sidekicks on X Factor include singers Ronan Keating and Guy Sebastian, as well as broadcaster Kyle Sandilands.

CAN YOU RUN UP THE STAIRS?

Of course! I live on the fourth floor of an apartment building, so I’m very good at running up stairs. I exercise three to four times a week, doing the Tracy Anderson Method, which involves toning and strengthening our small muscle groups.

While I was training for the London Marathon, I added running. I worked closely with physiotherapist Graeme Waterworth, and after completing the marathon in five hours and two minutes I had no injuries thanks to the warm-ups I did in preparation.

ANY VICES?

I quit smoking last October. I was only ever a social smoker, but being a singer it was a terrible habit. I quit through hypnosis. Four different people hypnotised me before it worked. I guess it comes down to how badly you want to stop.

WORST ILLNESS?

Food poisoning. I had the most incredible meal in a seafood restaurant once, trying oysters for the first time. Shortly afterwards, I was violently ill for 24 hours  -  I’ll spare you the details. So much for them being an aphrodisiac.

POP ANY PILLS?

My kitchen bench is covered with vitamins and protein powders. I go through phases when I’m sure I’m taking too many  -  but I don’t get sick often. Evening primrose is a must for PMS.

SLEEP WELL?

Generally I can sleep any time, anywhere, any place, unless I’m anxious about work. I can get performance anxiety, so when I’m on tour it can be hard to sleep.

EVER DIETED?

If my jeans get too tight, I watch my carbs for a few days. I’m half Italian, I love food, and I’ve never been one to push the olive around the plate.

IS SEX IMPORTANT?

Of course. you can have the loveliest boyfriend in the world, but if there’s no sexual chemistry, the relationship is destined to fail. I think women are at their sexual peak in their 30s  -  and I’ve got friends who tell me it only gets better in your 40s. Bring it on!

ANY FAMILY AILMENTS?

My dad has high blood pressure, but the rest of us have low blood pressure. It means I get a headspin if I get up too fast from doing yoga.

TRIED ALTERNATIVE THERAPY?

I’m a fan of homeopathy, acupuncture and spiritual healing. In Australia, this is not weird, but when I arrived in the UK, everyone thought I was a freak.

HANGOVER CURE ?

You can’t beat a straight-up 1,000mg Emergen-c with antioxidants to cure a hangover.

I’ve only just got back to London from several months in Australia, where I had the most incredible time running up and down the beach on the Goldcoast in Queensland.

It’s my first marathon and I’m running with Richard Branson for Virgin Unite youth charities and the End Fistula campaign – that’s really close to my heart.

I’ve always worked out up to four times a week, but I’m now in supergirl mode, and I don’t reckon I’ve ever been fitter or been able to eat more!

I ran 16 miles straight last weekend. It took a lot longer than expected because I had some knee trouble, but I’ve changed my shoes and sorted that out now. Completing that did wonders for my confidence.

The hardest thing about running in London is the cars and bikes. I almost got knocked over last week! You can get into such a trance running that you can forget to watch out for what’s going on around you!

I’ve been running in the evenings because I’ve been training with Holly and Sam Branson, and the rest of my friends in the Caterpillar team – although we have some friendly competition going, we’re happy to train together.

And they’re so much faster than me, I’m hardly a threat! I hope they manage all 32 of them being tied together.

These are my top 8 marathon training tips:

1. Technique
Whenever I get tired, I focus on that. It avoids getting an injury and is a really good distraction from how far you have left to run. Sometimes running blind helps, which means having no set time or path to follow. You can just check your miles later, although I’ve got lost a few times trying that!

2. Cross train
I am convinced that all the other workouts I do, benefit my running. I do Tracy Anderson Method with a girl called Maddie. There are so many exercises in this technique that strengthen the ham strings and the glutes. It also keeps your bum looking nice and pert, which is a bonus! And I do core and weight training with Efua Baker and John Rigby. My really long runs I do with Charlotte Thompson who is a very experienced marathon runner and trainer.

3. Pig out.
I worked out that I’d burnt off 1000 calories after my last run, which is basically half your daily intake. So make sure you’re eating enough. I generally eat well but I’m now eating tons and tons of whole wheat pasta. And the good thing is you can park any worries about ice cream and chocolate. It’s good for energy.

4. Energise
For short 30 minute runs I eat a bowl of porridge and two bananas. Honey for the fast natural energy and porridge as a slow burn carbohydrate.

5. Rest and play
Make sure you have at least two days rest each week. All of this is just a guideline; obviously you need to listen to your own body. If you’re injured, better to rest because you’ll only end up doing more harm than good.

6. Trainers
Give your shoes a rest too. Buy two pairs of decent running trainers, so you can ‘rest’ one. I’ve struggled to find the right pair of shoes but it is a really important part of the process (the most annoying part). I’ve settled on a pair of Brookes that are slightly too big. I’m working with a great Physio called Graeme Waterworth who’s taught me that if you get your technique right shoes are less of a problem. You should really put as much effort into stretching as you do your running. It’s investment into the marathon day.

7. Listen to your heart
A lot of people like to listen to music when they run, but it’s actually better to get into your own natural rhythm. The wrong tunes could have you running beyond your natural pace. My pace is about as fast as a slow snail!

8. Caught short!
Take your credit card, especially on a long run. I forgot mine and after dying of thirst, had to beg a lovely newsagent to give me a bottle of water a week back. I made a point of going back and paying him the pound I owed, though!
